The North American
Association for the History of the Language Sciences (NAAHoLS) was founded
in San Francisco in December 1987 to promote the study of the history of
the many disciplines concerned with language. These include linguistics
and subfields within anthropology, cognitive science, philosophy, psychology,
sociology, etc.
The Association distributes
a regular newsletter
to members to keep them informed of ongoing research projects, publications
in the field, and upcoming meetings of NAAHoLS
and of other societies with similar aims. Since its foundation in
1987, the Association has held annual
meetings in conjunction
with the Linguistic Society of America,
the American Dialect Society,
and the Society
for the Study of the Indigenous Languages of the Americas.
The Association
maintains close relations with other societies outside North America which
promote the study of the history of the language sciences, such as ANPOLL,
the Henry
Sweet Society, the Sociedad
Española de Historiografía Lingüística,
the
Société
d'Histoire et d'Épistémologie des Sciences du Langage,
the Studienkreis
Geschichte der Sprachwissenschaft, Società
di Filosofia del Linguaggio, and the Werkverband
Geschiedenis der Taalkunde.
Membership
is open to anybody interested in the history of the language sciences.
The Association welcomes members from outside the academic world and from
outside North America.
