In addition to articles in peer-reviewed journals (e.g., Language Learning, Modern Language Journal, Applied Psycholinguistics, Bilingualism: Language & Cognition, Journal of French Language Studies), Dr. Ayoun’s publication record includes two research monographs (Parameter Setting in Language Acquisition, 2003, Continuum; The Second Language Acquisition of French Tense, Aspect, Mood and Modality, 2013, John Benjamins), a co-authored/co-edited volume with Rafael Salaberry (Tense and Aspect in Romance Languages: Theoretical and Applied Perspectives, 2005, John Benjamins), and two edited volumes, French Applied Linguistics and Studies in French Applied Linguistics (2007 and 2008, respectively, John Benjamins). Dr. Ayoun also a handling editor for the Journal of French Language Studiesand the co-editor of the Studies in Bilingualism book series (John Benjamins).
Description and Objective:
The investigation of the acquisition of temporal systems has been the focus of much empirical research particularly since the formulation of the Aspect Hypothesis by Andersen (1986, 1991) for they involve all aspects of a language – pragmatic, lexical, syntactic, morphological – as well as the mapping from one aspect to the other (e.g., Ayoun & Salaberry 2005; Salaberry & Comajoan 2013). Temporal systems have thus the tremendous potential of informing our understanding of the developing competence of language learners. However, almost all empirical studies have focused on past temporality (e.g., Ayoun 2005, 2013a; Bardovi-Harlig 2000; Granda 2004; Salaberry 2008), neglecting the acquisition of the expression of other temporal references such as the present or the future with rare exceptions (e.g., Ayoun 2013b, Bardovi-Harlig 2005, Benati 2001, Howard 2012, Salsbury 2000 or Wiberg 2002 for the future; and Canales Viquez 2010, Gabriele & Canale 2011, Lim 2003 for the present), leaving unanswered the question of how the investigation of different types of temporality and aspect may inform our understanding of the acquisition of temporal, aspectual and mood systems as a whole. The purpose of this edited volume is to investigate the acquisition of present tense, temporality and aspect from a variety of languages and perspectives, thus providing a much more complete picture of the competence of language learners.
The cohesion of the volume will be insured by asking contributors to adhere to a common format including: an introduction to the theoretical perspective adopted; descriptive account of the representation of present temporality, tense and aspect in the L1-L2 combination being investigated; methodology (unpublished, original data); findings; discussion; conclusion; suggestions for future research.
Scholars are invited to contribute a chapter that may focus on any L1 and L2 combinations; child, adult acquisition or heritage learners; child acquisition in immersion or bilingual settings; child acquisition wit Specific Language Impairment; spoken or signed languages; any theoretical and/or applied perspectives.
