"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. FYI: IRIS: A Database of L2 Data Collection Instruments

FYI Body: IRIS - the new database of instruments and materials used to collect
data in second language research - is now available at http://www.iris-

Researchers can upload and download materials used in published L2
research and in approved PhD theses, from all theoretical and
methodological perspectives.

The database is searchable by author, research area, instrument type,
L1, L2, target feature, amongst many other parameters.

A few examples of data collection materials are: interview protocols,
language tests, observation schedules, pictures, questionnaires,
software scripts, sound files, teaching intervention tasks, word lists, but
there are many other possibilities.

IRIS aims to enhance the visibility and transparency of primary
research tools, facilitating replication and research agendas across
different contexts.

Materials submitted are licensed under Creative Commons Licensing.
The IRIS team can digitize paper and analogue materials, and help you
to pursue any permission requests. Please email iris@iris-database.org
with these requests or any questions.

The upload process takes 10 - 20 minutes, with even quicker and
easier upload of instruments once the first has been submitted.
