"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. FYI Body: Linguistics at the University of New England in Armidale, Australia, is looking for a visiting fellow in 2013. The fellowship can be between two weeks and three months in duration. Successful applicants will have a PhD in Linguistics or a related discipline; research interests that overlap with several researchers within the School of Behavioural, Cognitive, and Social Sciences (within which Linguistics is housed); a distinguished level of academic performance. Applicants will be granted a return economy airfare to Armidale; contribution to expenses; office space and administrative support.
