"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. FYI Body: I would like to remind those of you who are interested in attending the 2005 LSA Institute that after the end of this month (that is, as of April 1) the registration fee will go up to $100. It is now $50.

The decisions on the LSA fellowship applications will not be announced until some time in April. If you have applied for a fellowship and are waiting to hear from us to preregister, you will be able to do so until Friday May 13 with the $50 registration fee, whether or not you were awarded a fellowship.
