Jost Gippert: Our Featured Linguist!

"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. FYI: Open Access Project for Linguistics Books

Author: Stefan Müller

Linguistic Field(s): General Linguistics

FYI Body: Dear linguists,

The linguists from the Freie Universität Berlin and Martin Haspelmath started an open-access project, which is now almost ready for take off.

Our goal is to establish at least one series per description level (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, ...) and some series for special subjects (typology, CL, historical, ...).

We want to apply for funding to the DFG and for this it would be good to know how many books we may expect within the next two years. If you are working on a book and plan to do it with us, please sign a pledge to publish here:

The linguist list has 25.000 subscribers and studies show that 80% of scientists are for open access. So this will be 20.000 of the subscribers. If you feel that something goes extremely wrong in the book publishing business, please sign as a supporter and tell others about the initiative.

You may also sign as a reviewer, software developer, or typesetter (yourself or your staff, if you have resources to share).

Those of you who are already listed as supporters can nevertheless sign the pledge or enter any further commitments.

Let's do it now!

Stefan Müller

PS: If you have money over and/or really like the project, you may donate here:
