"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Media: Psycholing: BBC Radio 4: 'A Voice in the Crowd'

Media Body: For the last two weeks BBC Radio 4 has been broadcasting a new series
called 'A Voice in the Crowd', which deals (in layman's language)with
psychophonetic phenomena such as the 'cocktail party effect'. It will
run until October 6th. Remaining instalments in the series can be
heard on Sunday afternoons at 2.45pm. Note, however, that there is no
repeat, and the BBC have no plans to make the programme available
online through their 'Listen Again'web facility. Information about the
