"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Media: Qatar University holds fourth Linguistics in the Gulf Conference

Media Body: This past weekend Qatar University held its fourth Linguistics in the Gulf Conference. There were speakers from more than a dozen universities from around the world, including Jeffrey Heath, from University of Michigan.

“During these two days, delegates will address new challenges facing linguistics researchers and share experiences with colleagues from institutions in the region and beyond to advance the ongoing dialogue on this important area of study," said Rizwan Ahmad, Chair of the Department of English Literature and Linguistics.
