Ask-A-Linguist - Message details
Subject: Doubly filled CP in Quebec French question.
Question:
I am interested in subject extraction (long and local). I have observed that Standard French allows local animate subject extraction:

''Qui vient?'' (Who is coming?)

but disallows local inanimate subject extraction:

'' * Que/quoi fait ce bruit?'' ( What is making this noise?)

I would like to know if the situation is different in varieties that allow doubly filled CP.

According to what I have read so far (Léard,JM erudit.org) Quebec French allows :

''Qui qui vient?'' but ''Quoi qui fait ce bruit?'' is judged slightly degraded.
( ''quoi que tu fais''' and ''qui que tu regardes?'' being equally good)

I am extremly interested in any confirmation or further comment on these data.

Many thanks for your attention.

Heidi

Hi. I don't know much about French doubly-filled COMP, but I know who does: Eric Mathieu at Ottawa. You could see his dissertation and other works by him.
