Ask-A-Linguist - Message details
Subject: Different pronunciations of some common words
Question:
What information do you have about the (mis) pronounciations of both as "bolth", and ask as "axe"? I have spent the better part of an hour on the internet trying to get an answer to this question. Thank you so much for your generous assistance.

Reply:
Confirming Professor Foster's erudite exposition about ask and its counterpart "aks".
Some varieties of English regularly use the second, including African American
Vernacular English (aka AAVE).

Nor have I heard the less common version of "both" that you referred to, but I can
attest to a fairly common inserted "r" in words like "wash" in several regional
pronunciation. Have you heard that one? The surrounding environment (a back
vowel preceeding, a fricative following) is the same, although the specific vowel and
specific fricative are different. The Dictionary of American Regional English is
another resource you may find in your library. The last volume (Sk- to end of the
alphabet) is expected out in 2010.
