Jost Gippert: Our Featured Linguist!

"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Subject: College
Question: My boyfriend is currently interested in switching into a linguistics
major program, but through the research we have done it was
inconclusive which universities truly were the best. In a current
linguist's opinion, What university, preferably in the United States, is
the best for entering the field today?

Thank you for your time and consideration,

Catherine Atchley

Reply: I agree with my colleague's recommendation to look for a best fit in terms of interests
and lifestyle

I will add that any institution with a full linguistics department (especially one that
awards PhDs) will probably be able to provide what is needed. I would also look for a
school which combines both linguistics and the languages and sub-disciplines (e.g.
Classics, psychology, anthropology, computer science) of interest.

I believe you will find good candidate programs in all regions of the US and many at
less-expensive state schools.
