Jost Gippert: Our Featured Linguist!

"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Subject: The Language of an Old Book
Question: Dear Panelists,

A friend sent me two pages of an old book and asked me the
language. They can be accessed at the below URLs:

I'll be very pleased if you answer me. At internet I tried several
pages but I believe that you are the expert. The family says that
this book is about 2.000 years according to the C 14 test--hard to
believe--but they still could not find the language. If you are
interested, please inform me. The origin is Syria.

Yours Faithfully,
Hasan Arda
Reply: Hi, Hasan,

If you haven't heard from anyone, it's no doubt because the URLs
you gave seem to have disappeared from the Internet. (At least for
me, they generate an error message.) You might want to check and
correct this situation and then repost your query. (No guarantees,
though; while we are a diverse and knowledgeable group, we
surprisingly don't know everything.)
