Subject: Areas of studies
Question: What is the differences or similarities between a PhD in Linguistics and a PhD in Second language studies. Thank You very much
Reply: In agreement with my two colleagues who have previously given their responses (Fischer, Silva). I might add, if you have some specific departments or programs from particular universities to compare, list out for yourself what courses are required, what intermediate accomplishments you must produce, before you're permitted to write the dissertation. Frequently the intermediate accomplishments include examinations (which topics are offered or required by each program?) or some other big project. Another possible difference between these two related degree programs is that theory about and practices in pedagogy is likely part of the Second Language Studies focus, and highly unlikely in the Linguistics program.
