Jost Gippert: Our Featured Linguist!

"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Subject: Syntax-Discourse Interface
Question: I am a masters student in Computational Linguistics, and I would like to work in the area of Syntax-Discourse Interface for improving the parser outputs. When I browsed the internet, I came to see papers/books regarding only psycholinguistics/language acquisition based Syntax-Discourse Interface. But what I need is just the effects of discourse on syntax or vice verse. I would like to know if there is any good work has been done in this area especially in computational linguistics.

Reply: I’ve just come across this new book announcement at the Linguist, Shuanfan Huang’s _Chinese Grammar at Work_, which might be of relevance to you.
The book abstract makes no mention of computational methodologies, but the author’s examination of “how Chinese syntax emerges from natural discourse context” may fit your query.

M. Tomasello’s child language study, _Constructing a Language: A Usage-Based Theory of Language Acquisition_ also deals with similar matters.
