|Question:||My boyfriend is currently interested in switching into a linguistics major program, but through the research we have done it was inconclusive which universities truly were the best. In a current linguist's opinion, What university, preferably in the United States, is the best for entering the field today? Thank you for your time and consideration, Catherine Atchley|
|Reply:||Hi, Catherine, Susan is right, as usual. Besides, each of us would be likely to tell you to go to where we graduated from (hint: I'm from MIT). Also, some of the colleges are quite difficult to get into. Still, if you are interested in a more or less disinterested opinion, you might check out the US News site at: http://www.usnews.com/education/worlds-best-universities- rankings/best-universities-linguistics I can tell you that I wouldn't feel bad recommending any of the first ten or twenty universities listed there, although not necessarily in their order. Likewise, different universities take different views on accepting transfer students--some are easier than others to transfer to. The top universities may only accept into the freshman class under 10% of applicants, and the figure is probably lower for transfers. Good luck. Jim PS: The first US university at the site I mentioned is Harvard. Well, they only missed by two miles ;-)>. Oh, btw, most rankings for fields consider principally graduate school fields, rather than undergraduate ones (the US News one may be an exception to this). James L.
