Are ESL instructors with masters in linguistics considered
linguists, or is the title of linguist reserved only for those
holding doctorate degrees in linguistics?
Who can legitimately be referred to as a linguist?
You can certainly call yourself a linguist even with "just" an MA in linguistics. Just to
muddy the waters, the US military calls someone a linguist if they work as a translator
and may not even have a masters degree. That said, in almost any field, it's difficult if
not impossible to get an academic position without a terminal degree like a Ph.D. (or
