|Subject:||IPA transcription question|
One of my co-workers and I are having a disagreement regarding the IPA transcription
of the phrase ''Explore the Core''. One thought is that it is transcribed as: ɛkˈsplɔɚ ðə
kɔɝ and the other thought is that it is transcribed as: ɪk'splɔɚ ðə kɔɚ. Please let us
know the correct transcription (or let us know if we are both wrong). Thanks
The transcription depends on what you *actually* say, not on any standardised norms of “good” speaking. Compare e.g. the first vowel sound in the words “examine” or “explain”, which show the same variation as in the “explore” example you give. The same holds for the last vowel sound of the word “core”.
Judgements of right or wrong have nothing to do with actual speech and all to do with social perceptions of different accents. A correct IPA transcription renders what is spoken.
