"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Meeting Description: The Manchester and Salford New Researchers Forum in Linguistics (FiL) is an annual event which aims to bring together new researchers including postgraduate students, postdoctoral researchers and early career researchers to present current work, results and problems from any field of linguistics. The event includes the presentation of papers, posters, a careers panel and plenary talks, as well as a dinner and drinks. The FiL will take place at the University of Manchester from 2-3 November 2012.
