"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Previous conferences of the American Association for Corpus Linguistics have been held at different universities in the United States since 1998, including the University of Michigan (1999, 2005), Northern Arizona University (2000, 2006), University of Massachusetts-Boston (2001), IUPUI (2002), Montclair State (2004), Brigham Young University (2008), University of Alberta (2009), and Georgia State University (2011). In 2013, the conference will be hosted by San Diego State University.
