"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Meeting Description: We are pleased to announce the Learner Corpus Studies in Asia and the World 2013 (LCSAW2013) to be held from 23 March to 24 March 2013 at Kobe, Japan.

This is an international symposium to commemorate the completion of the International Corpus Network of Asian Learners of English (ICNALE) Project.

The ICNALE, a one-million-words corpus covering 11 countries and areas in Asia, is expected to promote learner corpus studies in the region.


Our symposium focuses on learner corpus (LC) studies from varied perspectives including but not limited to:

Design and Development of LC / Vocabulary and Grammar Seen in LC / LC and Education / LC and Analysis of Students’ Writing / LC and Studies of Word Englishes / LC and Contrastive Analysis of Asian Learners of English
