"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Meeting Description: Since 2007, the Mercator European Research Centre on Multilingualism and Language Learning (Leeuwarden, the Netherlands) and the Basque Government ( Basque Country)have an agreement to organise a European Expert Seminar every year.

The central focus of the fifth seminar, which will be held in November 2012, will be: 'Social media and its impact for lesser used languages'.

Another part of the agreement is a research project on multilingualism and multilingual education, a comparative study of the Basque Autonomous Community and the province of Fryslân. This multi-annual research project is carried out by the Mercator Research Centre in collaboration with the University of the Basque Country.
