"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Meeting Description: Following up on a scientific workshop originally hosted at the Institut für Afrikanistik, Universität zu Köln, Germany (April 6-7, 2010), TASIA2 will be hosted by the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB). The workshop will continue to explore different aspects of the use of Arabic based script for the writing of languages in Africa, apart from Arabic, which is also known as Ajami.

Please note: There will be no conference fee. The organizers will offer two lunches during the conference, as well as an ending cocktail. Costs of accommodation & travel must be covered by the participants themselves, but the organizers will try to assist in finding transport & accommodation to the venue.
