"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Meeting Description: AELFE, the European Association of Languages for Specific Purposes, has as its prime objective the advancement of research into and teaching of languages for specific purposes at higher education level within a context of harmonization of educational institutions in the EU. There is a growing need for authoritative voices to be heard, in the context of expanding European research, translation and teaching of languages in specific fields, such as Law, Engineering and the Health Sciences. Leading experts in these specialties will be taking part as keynote speakers, and we hope too that the conference will serve as a fruitful forum for an exchange of ideas between teachers.

During this conference, we will be looking at the challenges posed by multilingualism in Europe and the latest technological advances in the field, which is why it has as its title ‘A Roadmap for Languages for Specific Purposes’: Multilingualism and ICT’s (Information and Communication Technologies).
