"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Meeting Description: PAMLA conferences are held annually and welcome research on various topics in linguistics, literature, and cultural studies. The special theme for the 2013 PAMLA conference is ‘Stages of Life: Age, Identity, and Culture.’ The theme is intended to allow special sessions dealing with all aspects of the intersection of Age, Identity, and Culture, from Childhood Studies to Aging Studies. In addition to a regular Linguistics session, there will be a special session ‘Time, Language Variation, and Language Change.’ We will also have over 50 regular sessions on the topics that are approved as PAMLA standing sessions.
