"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Meeting Description: This conference aims to open a dialogue between language scientists of all disciplines by inviting work from very different domains (including neuroscience, biology, anthropology, computer science, engineering, philosophy, psychology, education, languages and linguistics) in order to explore key issues and to share our research in a fruitful and productive way. We hope that the conference will allow researchers not just a glimpse into the research agendas of others, but also a better understanding of the potential for future collaboration.

The four thematic strands will be:
