"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Meeting Description: Variation and Contact in Languaging: Ecological and Complex Approaches is a Satellite Workshop of the European Conference on Complex Systems ECCS 2013 hosted in Barcelona. It will be a half day workshop, on September 19. There will be invited talks and contributed talks.

The aim is sharing new mutual contributions in the field of socio/linguistics and establish an in-depth dialogue about the opportunities and limits of the links between sociological and philosophical propositions and mathematics, computer science and the modelling in terms of the complexity of language variation, change, contact, and evolution. In short, the goal is to find out what linguists can tell computational modellers and vice versa.
