"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. The next FGLS conference will be held at Newnham College, Cambridge, from 9–11 January 2014. For the third time we will be joining with our colleagues from the North American Society for Germanic Linguistics for a combined meeting.

We are delighted that Joseph Salmons (Lester W.J. “Smoky” Seifert Professor of Germanic Linguistics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison) has accepted our invitation to be a plenary speaker. He will speak on “Dialect mixing in Wisconsin Heritage German and Old High German.”
