"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Meeting Description: The Northeast Modern Language Association’s 45th annual convention in April 2014 is hosting the special session, 'Write it Down! Teaching Writing in the Foreign Language.'

This panel seeks papers on approaches of teaching writing in the foreign language in innovative and creative ways. How can writing be incorporated early on in the classroom? How can we teach language learners what the appropriate writing style is for different genres? How can writing be used to learn about culture or to expand on materials covered in class to foster language skills?
