"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Meeting Description: Coastal Carolina University is excited to host the 81st meeting of the Southeastern Conference on Linguistics (SECOL). SECOL 81 will be held March 27-29 at the Embassy Suites Resort in sunny North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

This year's conference will focus on the theme of Atlantic Englishes broadly conceived.

SECOL is the oldest regional linguistic association in the US, and is dedicated to the advancement of the study of language in all its aspects. The annual spring conference provides a venue for SECOL members to read and discuss scholarly papers. SECOL also publishes peer-reviewed articles and book reviews in The Southern Journal of Linguistics.
