"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Meeting Description: From 23-25 October Mercator European Research Centre on Multilingualism and Language Learning and the Ministry of the Basque Autonomous Community will organise an expert seminar on 'The Ethnocultural Dimensions in Education'. The conference will take place in Ljouwert/Leeuwarden and it will be a full and interesting programme. The presenters come from several multilingual areas in Europe and they will present about the role of culture (songs, dances, sports, food, etc) in the educational curricula of their region. The conference will rather have a practical than a theoretical character, since it is focused on best practices.
