"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Meeting Description: The Students’ Conference of Linguistics in India (SCONLI) is a two day international conference followed by one day workshop organized annually by the students of Linguistics studying at various universities in India and abroad. Initiated in the academic year 2006, SCONLI strives to provide a platform to research students to share their research with an international audience. SCONLI aims to promote research activities among students of Linguistics. It is a step towards building a network of future generation of linguists for better, in-depth and wide ranging work in different areas within linguistics. The year 2013-2014 is the eighth year of this most-awaited and popular event.

This year, SCONLI-08 is being hosted by the Department of Linguistics, University of Kashmir, Srinagar in collaboration with the Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore.
