"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Meeting Description: The 14th International Symposium on Chinese Languages and Linguistics (IsCLL-14) will be held in conjunction with the 10th anniversary of the Institute of Linguistics, Academia Sinica, on June 4-6, 2014. For nearly two decades, the biennial IsCLL conferences have brought together linguists working on Chinese languages and linguistics, each time under a specified conference theme. With the main theme 'Genetic Relationships among East-Asian Languages', the upcoming IsCLL-14 will be devoted to one of the core issues of historical linguistics with a focus on genetic relationships of languages such as Sino-Tibetan, Austronesian, Kam-Tai, Miao-Yao, Mon-Khmer, and Altaic languages.
