"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Meeting Description: AESLA is pleased to announce the 32nd conference to be held at the Universidad de Pablo Olavide, Seville from 3-5 April 2014.

The theme title this year is Language Industries and Social Change. The focus this year is on the connection between applied linguistics and the productive sectors responsible for economic and human development, in this way looking at the connection between language and industry, multi-linguistic economy, language as an asset and a resource, language and inequality, social stratification and linguistic capital, among other subjects related to the theme of the conference.
