"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Meeting Description: The Department of English at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of Sousse, Tunisia, is organizing an international interdisciplinary conference titled 'The Ethical and the Violent' from 6 to 8 March 2014. The event will be a podium to review and discuss the latest issues relating to its theme. The conference will seek to go beyond canonical representations of 'the ethical' and 'the violent' to debate their contemporary complexities as well as to question the problematic aspects of their return and reformation.

The steering committee welcomes panel/paper proposals from a wide array of disciplines, including:
