Meeting Description: The Coffee Break Project has been founded by a group of young scholars in Italy with a first conference held at Sapienza University of Rome in 2010. Most of the participants are broadly connected with 'Asian Studies'. The conviction on which the project is based is that the most stimulating and productive parts of any conference are the coffee breaks--when you get the opportunity to discuss your ideas freely with your colleagues. Previous CBCs have featured a number of thematic panels that bring together a broad range of areas of study, disciplinary locations, and perspectives. In order to encourage productive discussions, the papers (or longer abstracts) are precirculated, and reading of papers during the conference is positively discouraged. Moreover, the time allotted for each speaker equals the time for the discussion, so that a fruitful exchange of ideas along scholars of different disciplines becomes particularly encouraged and facilitated.

The next Coffee Break Conference will be held at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Sapienza University of Rome and will be organized around the theme 'Space, Culture, Language and Politics in South Asia: Common Patterns and Local Distinctions'. One panel of this conference will be devoted to the study of convergent phenomena in the 'second generation' Indo-European language. The panel, titled 'Toward Branch-Crossing Isoglosses in Indo-European Languages', will focus on the conceptual, definitional and theoretical problems that convergent phenomena present in order to lay the foundations for further research on the subject.

Please refer to the session abstract and the conference website for further information about this Panel and the Coffee Break Project in general.
