"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Meeting Description: The etymological department of the Institute of the Czech Language of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic will hold the conference “Etymological Symposium Brno 2014: Etymological Research of Old Church Slavonic: from the Slavonic, Indo-European and General Linguistic Perspective” in Brno, from 9–11 September 2014. The conference will contain a poster session.

The contributions are expected to focus on theoretical and practical aspects of the diachronic linguistic research illustrated especially on the data from Old Church Slavonic in the Slavonic, Indo-European and general linguistic context.
