"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. SinFonIJA is a formal linguistics conference organized each year by a
different institution in southeastern Europe, including the area of former
Yugoslavia, Austria and Hungary, covering all major areas of theoretical
linguistics. Previous successful editions took place in Sarajevo (2009),
Novi Sad (2010), Budapest (2011), Vienna (2012) and Niš (2013). The section
of theoretical linguistics at the Department of English is pleased to
announce that the 7th instantiation will take place at the
Karl-Franzens-University in Graz, Austria, on September 25-27 2014. This
year, we are planning a special session on semantic change, and one invited
speaker, Regine Eckardt, has, among others, confirmed her participation.
