"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Meeting Description: CSDL (Conceptual Structure, Discourse, and Language) 2014 is the 12th incarnation of a conference first hosted in 1994 by the University of California, San Diego. In 2000, CSDL 5 was hosted by the University of California, Santa Barbara and it is with great pleasure that we are bringing CSDL 12 back to the University of California system and to Santa Barbara in particular. CSDL 12 is co-organized by Stefan Th. Gries (Dept. of Linguistics) and Viola G. Miglio (Dept. of Spanish/Portuguese) and will take place at the Hyatt Santa Barbara directly at East Beach, Santa Barbara. Confirmed plenary speakers are William Croft, Adele E. Goldberg, and Elizabeth C. Traugott.
