"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Meeting Description: Perhaps the most exciting problem that English studies are facing today is coming to terms with the complexities of knowledge produced and dominated by the English speaking worlds in the past two and a half centuries. This conference therefore welcomes a critical discussion of this issue, in all the relevant fields ranging from applied and theoretical linguistics to literary theory and history, and translation studies. The conference is organized in celebration of 80 years of English studies in Zagreb.
