"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Meeting Description: The 10th annual meeting of the PAC project (La Phonologie de l'Anglais Contemporain: The Phonology of Contemporary English) will take place at Montpellier University (France) on the 26 and 27 May 2014.

The conference fee is 50 euros, which covers coffee breaks and two buffet lunches. The conference venue is the St. Charles research centre near the historic centre of Montpellier, served by the tram system, and within walking distance of many hotels in the centre of town.


From within the EU: By high-speed train, or by plane to Montpellier airport.

From within the UK: There are flights to Montpellier aiport from Gatwick, and also low-cost flights direct from Edinburgh and Manchester airports to B├ęziers (just south of Montpellier), which is on a main rail line to Montpellier.


A list of hotels will be emailed to participants once the programme has been drawn up.
