"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. MET’s 9th annual meeting will be held on 24-26 October at the brand new conference facilities of the Monastery of Poblet, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the province of Tarragona in Catalonia, Spain. The theme of this year's conference is 'language, culture and identity.' Prior to the start of the conference itself, a number of workshops will be offered to participants on different aspects of translation and editing. The keynote speakers this year will be translation scholar Michael Cronin as well as the writer, translator, and professor of writing Maureen Freely.
