"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Meeting Description: The Department of Linguistics and the program in Modern Greek Studies at the University of Illinois are delighted to announce the 3rd Annual Midwest Greek Linguistics Workshop which will take place at the Urbana campus on Saturday, May 18, 11am-4.30pm.

This year's plenary speaker will be Dr Anastassia Loukina (PhD Oxford, 2008) and the title of her talk is: 'Nature versus nurture in phonetic variation: what can we learn from Greek dialects?'.
