"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Meeting Description: We are proud to announce that LabPhon 14, the 14th Conference on Laboratory Phonology, will take place at the National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics (NINJAL) from 25 to 27 July 2014.

The overall theme for the conference is ‘Laboratory Phonology beyond the Laboratory: Quantitative Analyses of Speech Produced outside the Phonetics Laboratory’. Special sessions will be held on:

Fieldwork-based studies, particularly on endangered languages/dialects
Corpus-based approaches to spontaneous speech
Acquisition of L1 phonology/prosody

We are pleased to announce the following guest speakers:

Yasuharu Den (Chiba University/NINJAL)
Carlos Gussenhoven (Radboud University Nijmegen)
Mark Hasegawa-Johnson (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign)
Reiko Mazuka (Duke University/RIKEN Brain Science Institute)

Satellite workshops will be held on the day before and the day after the main conference.
