"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Meeting Description: The 88th Annual Meeting of the Linguistic Society of America will take place at the Hilton Minneapolis from January 2-5, 2014. The Annual Meeting will feature the usual concurrent, organized, and plenary sessions, professional development activities, networking opportunities, and more. In addition, a special suite of activities and presentations will mark the 90th anniversary of the LSA.

Minneapolis, the host city of the Meeting, offers a wealth of cultural, social and culinary possibilities, just a few of which are listed at http://www.linguisticsociety.org/content/minneapolis-wintertime.
