"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Meeting Description: The workshop focuses on integrating and embedding quantitative methods within undergraduate programmes in linguistics. We give practical examples from our own ESRC funded project, report on student reaction and discuss the successes and challenges.

British undergraduate students in language and linguistics tend not to be too interested in numbers. They have often ‘dropped’ maths at 16 and have even been known to react with horror at the prospect of facing some gentle numeracy in their degree course. Similar things may be true even of their lecturers, many of whom have come through the same school system, dropping ‘STEM’ subjects and concentrating on humanities, tending to focus on the qualitative rather than the quantitative aspects of their discipline.

And yet, numbers matter.

For academic credibility, for employability and for publication an ability to consider, interpret and challenge quantitative claims is an important aspect of becoming a credible linguist. This workshop brings together academics and prospective academics working in the fields of language and linguistics in order to explore the challenge of embedding quantitative aspects into the curriculum.

The workshop is free to attend but registration is required.
