| Meeting Description: |
Conference Theme:
Language and Life: Description, Theory and Beyond Keynote Speaker: Alana Johns Professor, Department of Linguistics University of Toronto Inspired by the title of Charles Bally’s book ‘Le langage et la vie (1913)’, the theme of this year’s meeting is twofold: language as a fact of life, and life as a property of languages. In recent years there has been considerable interest in the idea of language as a biological phenomenon, and a renewed debate about how much of human beings’ biological predisposition to acquire and use language is specific to language, and how much is attributable to more general properties of human cognition. At the same time, languages themselves are living things, in the sense that they grow and change. The tasks of observing and documenting languages in all their rich diversity, and of offering assistance to communities who are interested in preserving their languages, are an essential complement to endeavours in all other areas of descriptive, theoretical, and applied linguistics, and are of foundational importance in striving to understand language as a fact of human life. The registration fee for the conference is $80 ($40 for retirees and $20 for students). All presenters must be members of the Atlantic Provinces Linguistic Association (APLA). The annual membership fee of $30 ($15 for students) may be paid at the conference. For more information about APLA, please visit http://www.unb.ca/apla-alpa.
