"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Co-hosted by the University of Wisconsin–Madison

The SLA graduate students at the University of Iowa and the University of Wisconsin–Madison have formed a partnership to host an annual SLA Graduate Student Symposium. Organizing and hosting the conference alternates between the universities. Graduate students in SLA and related disciplines present their work and meet distinguished researchers in their fields. The theme of the 2013 symposium is Contexts of Learning. It will take place in Iowa City, IA April 19 - 20, 2013.
