Jost Gippert: Our Featured Linguist!

"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Meeting Description: Workshop: New Insights into the Syntax and Semantics of Complementation
Organizers: Lukasz Jedrzejowski, Mathias Schenner, Kerstin Schwabe

This workshop is part of the 21st International Conference on Historical Linguistics (ICHL 21):

http://www.hf.uio.no/ifikk/english/research/events/ichl2013/

The purpose of this workshop is to examine the diachronic origin and change of complementation structures within a language as well as across languages. We would like to discuss how the emergence and change of embedded clause types interact with the development of different clause-embedding predicate classes. Additionally, we would like to pay closer attention to how semantic change of clause-embedding predicates may give rise to or prohibit new complementation types.

Invited Speakers:

Katrin Axel-Tober
Ulrike Demske
Regine Eckardt
Cathrine Fabricius Hansen
Elly van Gelderen
Linguistic Subfield: Historical Linguistics; Semantics; Syntax; Typology
