"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Meeting Description: This interdisciplinary conference will bring together the work of researchers, educators, and policy makers in the areas of first and second language acquisition from language pedagogy and psycholinguistic perspectives. Our goal is to provide an opportunity for participants to engage with the implications of multilingualism from a range of perspectives, including the effects of being bilingual from childhood to adulthood, the process and benefits of learning multiple languages, and the impact of multilingualism on society. Keynote speakers include Craig Chambers (University of Toronto), Jim Cummins (Ontario Institute for Studies in Education) and Tracey Derwing (University of Alberta).
