"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Meeting Description: On February 6-7, 2014, the Fribourg-based Informal Research Group will be hosting the conference ‘Negotiating Methodological Challenges in Linguistic Research’ at the Institute for Multilingualism in Fribourg, Switzerland.

This conference gives junior and more experienced researchers alike a forum to discuss methodological challenges they are facing in their current projects and to work towards solutions together with the other attendees in a format that features talks and workshops.

In addition, four highly regarded scholars will give plenary talks discussing how they went about tackling methodological difficulties in their previous work.

‘Negotiating Methodological Challenges in Linguistic Research’ is geared towards researchers in the fields of applied linguistics, historical linguistics, psycholinguistics and sociolinguistics.
